Call for real time crime watch participants

The Boston Police Department District D-4 and the Neighborhood Watch Unit has been working closely with the South End Business Alliance and Washington Gateway Main Streets to ensure the continued collaboration and communication with the business community. Our goal is to maintain and reinforce these relationships to ensure a safe, friendly and thriving business community.

Violent crime incidents and listings

A man was brought to the BMC with two gunshot wounds in his leg. Though the victim didn’t say much, he alluded to the fact he got shot while at a club. Police were unable to locate any crime scene.

South End secrets, freelancers, softball, restaurants and parks

South End News news, as well as restaurant, softball and Titus Sparrow Park updates.

Negotiating for space

In the next few weeks, Ellis Memorial & Eldridge House will get the final written word from the Zoning Board of Appeals on whether their newest construction project is approved.

A lifetime of learning

"You just have to have an interest in learning," South End resident Helaine Simmonds, 74, said over the phone recently. She was talking about the requirements to attend the University of Massachusetts (UMass) program, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), which offers classes to people over the age of 50.

City in bloom

As the sun sank in the sky on Friday, August 26, Mayor Thomas Menino stepped up to the microphone at the Boston Public Garden.

Long-time resident still busting a move

"Dance is the visual expression of sound," Duggan Hill explains. "You have to look like the sound. If not, it’s just movement." As he says this, Hill glances over at the dancers rehearsing in front of the mirror, mentally critiquing their moves. It is August 22, a Saturday, and some of his City Lights students have come to practice their dance routines.

Two more trees headed to chopping block

On Thursday, September 9, the Boston Parks and Recreation Department will be holding a hearing about the removal of two shade trees at 493 Massachusetts Avenue, Parish CafĂ©’s newest location. A press release from the Parks Department said the hearing would discuss the removal of two five-inch diameter green ash trees for the purpose of putting in tables for a sidewalk cafe.

Grand celebration for youngsters

On the morning of Friday, August 27, family members in the audience stood, cheered and whooped as their capped-and-gowned children marched down the aisle toward the stage. Teachers stood proud on the sidelines. Cameras flashed and then flashed again.

Challenged to do better

Alongside 49 other animal shelters in the United States, the Animal Rescue League (ARL) is competing to win $100,000. Since the beginning of August, the shelter has been a part of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) $100K Challenge, a competition that requires the shelter to provide 300 more homes for cats, dogs, kittens and puppies between August and October than they did during the same period last year.
