The new neighborhood hang out

In the kitchen at Perdix (now Pops), Rebecca Roth, Seth Yaffe and Seth Morrison cooked up the idea of working together on a restaurant concept. Five years later, the three friends have finally reunited to open The Gallows, a relaxed South End eatery where Roth and Yaffe manage operations and staff, and Morrison heads up the kitchen as executive chef.

Lasker’s Variety reopens

A South End tradition is back open on Appleton Street after being closed since January.

The pampered paw

It was 2002 and Rebecca Willson was waiting. After sitting inside with her five-year-old mutt for hours without one sign of her scheduled dog-walker, she called the walking company.

South End couple hopes to simplify wine shopping with The Urban Grape

Walking into a wine store can sometimes be intimidating. The overwhelming display of options can leave the customer wondering which wine will best suit his or her needs. T.J. and Hadley Douglas, South End residents and owners of The Urban Grape, a new wine shop opening in Chestnut Hill, are seeking to dispel the myth that wine shopping must be confusing.

Vessels reopens with a bang at 450 Harrison Ave.

"I’m surprised this many people showed up despite the pouring rain," said Vessels Gallery proprietor Bobbie Tunnard, referring to a packed grand re-opening show this past Friday, April 9. Startled by a loud crunch, she snapped her head around to investigate, only to find out it was just someone taking out the trash. "That’s the last thing you want to hear at a ceramics show," she joked with a smile of relief.

The party’s back at Club Café

For any business owner, staying current with changing consumer preferences is one of the most difficult and important tasks. Frank Ribaudo and Jim Morgrage, co-owners of the South End gay bar and restaurant Club Café, understand this aspect of management, and recently decided to renovate their establishment and offer more varied options to patrons.

Espresso gives the South End a jolt of energy

Last year’s economic bombshell, reminiscent of The Great Depression, caused an alarming number of layoffs and cutbacks. Yet, as the dim light at the end of the tunnel slowly brightens, many companies still find themselves on the operating table patching holes in their budgets from the shrapnel-particularly in marketing and advertising budgets. Espresso, an integrated marketing agency expanding in a time that others are shrinking, may just have the surgical tools companies are looking for.

AAC opens new boutique version of its Boomerangs chain on Washington Street

The way AIDS Action Committee (AAC) figures it, if there’s one place where high-end fashion and nonprofit work ought to meet, it’s in the South End. In that light, AAC, a community-based nonprofit health organization dedicated to stopping the spread of HIV/AIDS, hopes that union will produce big results at its new store, Boomerangs, at 1407 Washington Street.

Pops giving customers what they want with new bar

Within the dynamic and endlessly changing South End scene, it may be a bit intimidating for the nascent and inexperienced to run a business. However, accomplished Pops Restaurant and Bar co-owners Doug and Lily Noble and Chef Felino Samson have embraced the neighborhood’s continuously altering atmosphere. In response to a high consumer demand, the three restaurateurs are now offering a full bar in addition to Pops’s normal restaurant seating.
