Columbus Center developers admit the end has come

The Columbus Center project, which has wallowed in limbo for years, won’t be built, the site’s developers have acknowledged. Two of the lease-holders on the land slated for the project, Boston-based WinnCompanies and the California state pension fund known as CalPERS, could not come up with a viable business plan during the month that they were given since Feb. 9 to present a plan to state officials that indicated they had a scheduled timeline to restart construction on the project.

Cathedral boys basketball finishes one game short of fourth title in five years

Anyone with competitive experience, athletic or otherwise, will tell you that the only thing more difficult than winning a championship is doing it again the next year. The South End’s Cathedral High School (CHS) boys basketball team, 2009 Division 4 State Champions, got a tough history lesson Monday night, March 8, at the TD Garden, falling to New Mission High School in a 75-47 loss. However, heart-wrenching as it may be to come so close to another title, this year’s team continued a successful trend under head coach Carnell Suttles and looks to return a strong lineup next season.

Bromfield Gallery mixes it up

Bromfield Gallery teemed with guests last Friday night, March 5, as artists Charles Goss and Dianne Lam showed installations of their work, on display at 450 Harrison Avenue until March 27. From form to theme, the artists’ showings diverged, with Lam’s introspective work hanging in the back two galleries and Goss’s humorous pieces showing in the front.

On the ground in Haiti

Last week South Ender Dr. Doug Fiero, joined by three nurses and a nurse practitioner, flew down to Hopital Sacre Couer, a 64-bed hospital in Cap Haitien, Haiti, currently dealing with the impossible task of helping over 500 patients. The hospital, run by the nonprofit CRUDEM, out of Ludlow, Mass., has set up a tent hospital to help deal with the demand for aid. The group paid for its own airfare and each traveler used vacation time while away. (For more on the trip read "Local doctor making an impact in Haiti," 3/4/10).

A look at what could have been at the Garden

I’m not quite sure what to make of this year’s Celtics squad. They have the talent to win it all. When healthy and motivated, the roster appears to have every conceivable hole filled. However, health and desire both appear to have waned as this team’s moon has waxed, and I highly doubt the C’s will make it past Cleveland should they face off.
