Fifteen South End residents will lace up on April 20 as members of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team in the 130th Boston Marathon presented by Bank of America.
Erin "Maddy" Berg, Deven Bhattacharya, Derek Boyse, Elizabeth Egan, Daniel Flynn, Elizabeth Holmes, Maddie Holmes, Shannon Lydon, Sarah Lyons, Ryan McCaffrey, Bobby Pearl, Benjamin Ravelson, Christina Sakellaris, Francesca Simeone, and Joseph Whitney will join more than 500 Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge teammates from across the country and around the world in running the historic 26.2-mile route from Hopkinton to Boston.
Collectively, the team aims to raise more than $8.75 million for cancer research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
This year marks the 37th annual running of the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge, the Boston Marathon's largest and longest-running charity team. One hundred percent of funds raised support Dana-Farber's Claudia Adams Barr Program in Innovative Basic Cancer Research, which funds early-stage scientific research. Since 1990, the Marathon Challenge has raised more than $140 million for the program.
Runners include cancer survivors and patients, as well as family members and friends of those affected by cancer. Participants who receive an invitational entry from Dana-Farber commit to raising at least $12,000, while runners who secure their own race entry commit to raising a minimum of $4,000.
Dana-Farber was among the first charity organizations recognized by the Boston Athletic Association, which organizes the marathon. Team members receive fundraising support, training runs, special events, and access to a post-race recovery area. Marking the 50th anniversary of his 1976 Boston Marathon victory, Jack Fultz will serve as the team's training advisor for the 37th time.
