USES Recognized with Historical Marker as Part of Everyone250 Campaign
Thursday Mar 5, 2026
United South End Settlements (USES) was formally recognized as a historic site during a Feb. 27 ceremony in the organization's courtyard at 36 Rutland St.
The unveiling, hosted by Embrace Boston and United South End Settlements, marked USES' inclusion in the citywide Everyone250 initiative, which commemorates historically significant sites ahead of the nation's 250th anniversary.
A temporary historical marker was presented recognizing USES as a South End community anchor since its founding in 1892 and honoring its decades of service to families and individuals from all backgrounds.
Speakers at the event included Embrace Boston President and CEO and Everyone250 Co-Chair Imari Paris Jeffries; USES President and CEO Jerrell Cox; State Sen. Liz Miranda; Rep. John Moran; and historian and journalist Dart Adams.
The unveiling is part of Everyone250's Monuments and Markers campaign, which aims to elevate stories from communities that have historically been underrepresented. More than a dozen marker unveilings are planned. Sites already recognized include the W.E.B. Du Bois Monument, King's Chapel, Union Church, and Twelfth Baptist Church.
Organizers described the ceremony as a celebration of Black history, neighborhood legacy, and civic leadership in the South End.
