Boston Medical Center's marathon team kicked off the 2026 Boston Marathon season at a recent celebration bringing together the hospital's 72 registered runners and supporters.
The athletes are training and fundraising ahead of the April 20 race, with proceeds supporting BMC's community health initiatives through the Bank of America Boston Marathon Official Charity Program.
Funds raised help support several programs that address healthcare access and social determinants of health:
The Economic Justice Hub provides financial coaching, job pathways, and free tax preparation services to patients and families. BMC operates the nation's first hospital-based food pantry, distributing over 1 million pounds of nutritious food annually. The hospital's Teaching Kitchen offers healthy cooking and nutrition classes, incorporating fresh produce from BMC's two rooftop farms.
Marathon donations also support efforts to secure safe housing for patients, expand mental health services, and increase access to clinical trials and research.
Insurance does not reimburse much of this work, making philanthropic support critical to BMC's mission of providing world-class healthcare to all.
