What You Need to Know
When the City of Boston declares a snow emergency, residents must follow specific regulations to keep streets clear for plows and emergency vehicles.
Parking Restrictions
During declared snow emergencies, parking is prohibited on all posted snow emergency arteries and major roads. Vehicles parked on these streets will be ticketed and towed. Residents should monitor local news, the city's website at boston.gov/snow, or sign up for AlertBoston notifications to stay informed about emergency declarations.
Discounted Parking Options
Boston offers discounted parking at participating garages and lots for vehicles displaying resident parking stickers. Residents can begin parking at these facilities two hours before a declared emergency and must remove their vehicles within two hours after the ban is lifted, or face standard rates.
Shoveling Requirements
Property owners must clear all snow, sleet, and ice from sidewalks and curb ramps within three hours after snowfall ends, or within three hours after sunrise if snow falls overnight. Failing to shovel can result in fines. Never throw snow from private property into the street.
Space Savers and Safety
After a snow emergency ends, residents have 48 hours to use space savers to hold shoveled parking spots. Remember to clear fire hydrants and catch basins near your property. When shoveling, clear vehicle exhaust pipes to prevent deadly carbon monoxide buildup, and never let children sit in idling cars.
