New library news
Our last Community Meeting in June highlighted the latest design elements of the new building being planned to replace the current, closed library branch. We have recently learned we are likely to have another Community Meeting in October, which is not yet confirmed. At that time, we hope to see more interior design details as well learn when the "action" -- demolition, materials management, construction fencing -- will begin and what the timeline looks like.
Last summer concert
The summer season for Pat Loomis concerts concluded at the end of August, and was well-received! Brazilian flavor jazz mixed with a few pop songs by Pat Loomis & Friends, including a lovely vocalist, Concetta. We're actively scouting out a temporary venue for next summer since our beloved Library Park will be closed for construction.
Fall author series
The South End Library Author Series returns: come enjoy stimulating evenings connecting with admired authors whose work will range across multiple genres and geographies! It's also a great time to connect with friends and neighbors! After the talk and Q&A discussion, take advantage of the opportunity to purchase the showcased book(s) from Parkside Books, enjoy the signing, and appreciate delicious appetizers, wine or soft drinks with other readers from the South End. Our Fall 2025 series of three sessions will be held at the Union Church at 485 Columbus Ave, at 6:30pm in the Connection Room. They will also be available by Zoom for those who are unable to come in person.

FOSEL insta a la aprobación oportuna del presupuesto municipal

El presupuesto municipal de la alcaldesa Michelle Wu para el año fiscal 2026-27 ya está en manos del Ayuntamiento, y los defensores de los Amigos de la Biblioteca de South End han comenzado a presionar al Ayuntamiento para que proteja los 30 millones de dólares asignados en el presupuesto para la sustitución de la Biblioteca de South End.
Yvette Jarreau, presidenta de los Amigos de la Biblioteca de South End, intervino el 6 de mayo en la audiencia sobre el presupuesto municipal, presidida por el concejal del Distrito 4, Brian Worrell. Jarreau señaló que la sucursal de South End ha estado cerrada durante casi cinco años debido a la COVID-19 y las inundaciones. La nueva biblioteca no abrirá hasta finales de 2028.
"Tenemos niños en South End que no tienen experiencia con una biblioteca sucursal" en su barrio, dijo Jarreau. Tenemos personas mayores que temen no estar presentes para el nuevo año fiscal. Es crucial que voten a favor del dinero asignado en el presupuesto para el próximo año fiscal.

Conciertos de verano en el Parque de la Biblioteca
Pat Loomis y sus amigos ofrecerán una serie de conciertos de jazz y blues en el Parque de la Biblioteca, cada martes a partir de las 18:30 h: 1, 15, 29, 12 y 26 de agosto (fechas por determinar si llueve).
Estos probablemente serán los últimos eventos patrocinados por FOSEL en el parque antes de la demolición del edificio actual y el inicio de la construcción del nuevo.
