Methunion Manor Cooperative Corporation, located on the 375-465 block of Columbus Avenue, recently celebrated a remarkable milestone: 41 years as one of Boston's oldest housing cooperatives and 55 years of providing affordable housing in the South End.

Born from a minority-initiated affordable housing effort, Methunion Manor has weathered decades of neighborhood gentrification while maintaining its commitment to accessible homeownership. The cooperative's resilience and community impact were formally recognized when Mayor Michelle Wu presented a proclamation to the organization on August 30.

The MMCC Board of Directors accepted the mayoral proclamation during the cooperative's Annual Community Cookout, a neighborhood tradition that reflects the organization's deep community roots.

"MMCC is very proud to continue to be a Village of Impact in the South End Community," said a board representative. "We have been since the beginning, and will always be a staple in the community, representing affordable ownership in Boston's South End."

As housing costs continue to rise throughout Boston, Methunion Manor stands as a testament to the power of cooperative ownership in preserving affordable housing options for working families in one of the city's most sought-after neighborhoods.

The cooperative's four-decade journey from its origins as a minority-led housing initiative to its current status as a cornerstone of South End affordable housing demonstrates the lasting impact of community-driven solutions to urban housing challenges.
