A 25-year-old Newton, New Hampshire man was sentenced to 28 to 34 years in state prison on Monday for multiple sexual assaults in Boston's Mass and Cass area, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's office.
Maxwell Newman was convicted by a Suffolk Superior Court jury on May 16 on four counts of rape, three counts of assault and battery, two counts of assault to rape and one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
Judge Debra Squires-Lee imposed the sentence, citing Newman's "repeated acts of violence, deliberate targeting of vulnerable women and degrading treatment," according to the DA's office.
Prosecutors said Newman drove to the Mass and Cass area at least three times in spring 2023 to commit the assaults.
The first incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on June 12, 2023, outside a Sunoco station. Later that same night, Newman returned to the area and convinced another woman to enter his vehicle.
Newman drove the second victim around Boston, then to his home in New Hampshire, and finally to a parking lot in Pemberton State Park in Lawrence. Two fishermen walking to their car heard screaming and observed Newman assaulting the victim, who was bleeding with visible injuries to her face. The victim reported being punched, beaten and raped.
Investigators identified Newman through video footage showing him entering and exiting the state park in his Kia Forte. Additional evidence was obtained from the vehicle's dash camera and Newman's cellphones.
In October 2023, detectives received a CODIS DNA database match indicating the first two assaults were committed by the same perpetrator. A DNA sample obtained through court order after Newman's June 24, 2023 arrest for the third assault linked him to DNA evidence from the first two incidents.
