Summer Programs for Kids

Roxbury Community College is offering summer programs for kids. We have a 4-week Summer Arts Intensive program (ages 10-14) and two Summer STEM Weeks. Summer Arts features drama, theater, taiko drums, creative writing, and dance. STEM Week 1 (ages 7 - 10) features awesome chemistry and science experiments, coding, mini medical school, and creative writing. STEM Week 2 (ages 10 - 14) features LEGO Robotics, Money Matters, creative writing, and a STEM career panel. Limited spots - enroll today!

Paige Academy Summer Program

Community Housing Clinic

The Office of Housing Stability's Community Housing Clinic is a tremendous resource for residents - tenants and landlords - to talk one-on-one with a housing professional about landlord-tenant laws, learn how to access affordable housing opportunities and discover housing resources available to landlords and tenants. Tenants can learn about their rights if their building is sold, their rents are rising or they're facing eviction. Landlords can get information on enforcing lease provisions, cost-effective resources to resolve disputes and programs to support home repairs and maintenance.

Free Bilingual Playgroup

There is a free Jamaica Plain based playgroup in English and Spanish for children ages 1-5 years old. Each playgroup is 2 hours long, and parents should bring their children once a week. The playgroup takes place in a classroom setting and the goal is preparation for kindergarten. Each playgroup includes free play, circle time, snack time, and a gross motor/sensory activity. Parents are responsible for providing their own snacks. This is also an opportunity for parents to become familiar with Boston Public Schools and to meet other BPS parents. JVS English for Advancement Program

The program has two components: Classes and Career Coaching/Employer referral.
Students receive free in-class language instruction (7-9 hours per week) in multi-leveled classes for up to one year. Class content focuses on job search and readiness skills. Students receive 1:1 career coaching and referrals from JVS coaches. The coaches draw on JVS's extensive network of employer relationships. Please note that eligible participants are legally authorized to work in the United States and have a primary goal of job attainment within 2-12 months.
Classes are held mornings and afternoons, (there is one evening class in East Boston.)
Locations include downtown Boston (at JVS Boston, 75 Federal Street 3rd Floor), East Boston (250 Sumner St., East Boston), Lynn (20 Wheeler St., Lynn), Lawrence (168 Newbury St., Lawrence), and Lowell (450 Merrimack St., Lowell).
The first step to applying for the classes is to attend an information session. Sessions are held at 10 AM every Friday at JVS. Seven Skills for School Success

The Family Nurturing Center will be presenting a ten-week program titled, "Seven Skills for School Success", at the Harvard Ed Portal. This program will be facilitated in Spanish. Allston-Brighton parents with young children are invited to join this program to learn about child development and supporting their child's success in a thoughtful and fun group setting. Child care is provided.

Career Collaborative: Find a full-time job and keep it!
Career Collaborative offers a free program that helps unemployed and under-employed men and women find good full-time, permanent jobs with benefits and keep them. The positions are in a variety of fields often with some of Boston's leading employers. The program is offered during the day every month, and during the night several times a year.
To apply for the program, please come to an Information Session any Thursday at 1:00 pm or by appointment. Plan to spend about an hour and it will be helpful to bring a resume.

Get a Free Bicycle with CommonWheels' Earn-A-Bike Workshops

This winter, CommonWheels is hosting its second season of Earn-A-Bike program, in collaboration with Charlesview, Inc. This program is specifically designed for women in the Allston-Brighton area. This program is designed to give women who lack financial access to a bicycle an opportunity to learn bike mechanics and maintenance while fixing up a bicycle that they will keep at the end of the program. Participants will be taught skills such as how to fix a flat tire, how to fix brakes, and how to fix problems inside your bike. This program is free, but available spots are limited and participants must submit an application to be accepted into the program. We will have two sessions, with the first beginning in January.
Participants who attend at least 5 of the 6 sessions will earn:

  • a fully functional bicycle
  • a helmet, lock, and lights
  • training on maintaining, fixing, and riding your bicycle

    YEAR UP Recruitment

    For young adults interested in taking their next step in their journey towards a career & higher education, Year Up's mission is to close the opportunity divide through a one-year intensive program.     Senior Save Applications Now Available

    City announced that applications are now available for Seniors Save, a proactive program that helps income eligible seniors replace failing or inefficient heating systems before winter begins? Applications are currently available through the Boston Home Center (BHC), by visiting the Department of Neighborhood Development's website, or by contacting one of the BHC's partner senior agencies. To qualify, income-eligible seniors must be 60 years of age or older, the occupants of a residential one-to-four family property or condominium in the City of Boston and income must not exceed 80 percent of median family income, as determined by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. Eligible homeowners will receive a $3,500 grant towards upgrades to their heating systems. Any additional funding is available in the form of a zero percent interest, deferred loan, which will only be payable on the sale of the property, a refinance or transfer of the title. Once a senior citizen submits an application, BHC Construction Specialists will work with the homeowner on the scope of the project, and will help select a contractor from the BHC's pre-approved, licensed and insured contractor list. A BHC Construction Specialist will then oversee the work from start to finish.

    Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC)

    What immigrants can do now. People should go to a legal services provider to be screened for any possible immigration options other than DACA they for which they may already eligible.
    The Immigration Advocates Network maintains a national directory of more than 950 free or low-cost nonprofit immigration legal services providers in all 50 states. It can be found online at https://www.immigrationlawhelp.orgCommunity members should be warned of fraudulent service provider schemes and educated about how to seek competent immigration help.     Volunteer with Sole Train

    Sole Train is a community building and mentoring program that uses running as a vehicle for setting and achieving seemingly impossible goals. Volunteers are asked to commit 1-2 hours a week (practices vary: 9am-4pm, M-F), 5 weekend races/community building events from September to June, culminating with Boston's Run to Remember (5 mile or half marathon race). No running experience is required.

    Boston 1ON1 is an opportunity for a new resident to learn about the many services in Boston that might affect them.
