BMC Relocates Emergency Entrance; East Concord Street Bus Stop Moves

Thursday Feb 27, 2014

As part of Boston Medical Center's (BMC) clinical campus redesign that was announced fall 2013, the hospital is preparing to make some changes on campus that are notable for both patients, staff, and the broader community.

ED Walk-In Entrance Relocation:

To prepare for the start of renovations to the Menino Building, the Emergency Department (ED) Walk-In Entrance is scheduled to temporarily relocate from Albany Street to the Menino Pavilion Lobby entrance on Harrison Avenue beginning at 5:00 a.m. Saturday, March 22. This entrance will remain until the new permanent ED Walk-In entrance opens at the Shapiro Courtyard in late 2016. Ambulances will continue to access the ED through Albany Street.

BMC has worked closely with the City of Boston and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) on all components of the clinical campus redesign project, such as the relocation of the ED Walk-In Entrance. BMC also has partnered and been in regular communication with community organizations in regards to the project and the changes that will impact our surrounding neighbors.

Planned Support for BMC Community:

To assist patients and visitors with this change, BMC is doing the following:

Updating exterior street signage and creating new signage to clearly direct walk-in traffic from surrounding streets on campus to the Menino Pavilion Lobby for the ED Walk-In entrance.

Interior signage will be installed to redirect ED walk-in access to the Menino Pavilion lobby.

Public safety staff will be located at the exterior building entrance weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. to help direct patients and visitors.

Valet parking is currently available at the Menino Pavilion Lobby entrance on Harrison Avenue and there will be increased valet staff starting March 22nd.

The hospital will continue to notify all staff members of the new temporary ED walk-in entrance.

A new ED control desk will be located and staffed 24/7 in the lobby of the Menino Pavilion to appropriately direct pedestrian traffic.

Additional volunteers will be stationed at entrance points to assist patients and visitors.

Information about the campus redesign will be included on the hospital's website - bmc.org.

East Concord Street Bus Stop

On March 12, the MBTA Bus Stop on East Concord Street will be moved 100 yards north (toward Harrison Avenue) on East Concord Street and located by the brick wall.

The Menino Bike Racks will be relocated to 710 Albany on in late May/early June.

Once complete the new expanded ED will have increased waiting room space, a new pediatric

ED, improved adjacency to Urgent Care and separated behavioral health holding and treatment areas.
