A pleasant, sunny spring day helped bring out a good crowd for the third Bikes Not Fights event in O'Day Playground, 85 West Newton Street on Saturday afternoon, May 11. Kimel Williams of the City of Boston's Boston Bike program pumped tires and tuned up bicycles for free at the event, which also included a bike rodeo/agility activity, games, sidewalk art and refreshments, including Hoodsie ice cream cups courtesy of the Boston Police Department's free ice cream truck.

Vejigantes Restaurant, 57 West Dedham Street; South End Food Emporium, 469 Columbus Avenue; Maná Escondido Café, 68 Aguadilla Street; IBA and other local businesses sponsored the event and donated food, gifts and other materials.

A volunteer named Emmanuell from the Boston Bicycle Union staffed an information table, talking to participants about the Union's activities, including advocating for better accommodations for bicyclists in the city and awareness of bicycle safety. "I think today went really well. It was the first sunny Saturday in about three months, and we had more people this year, and we had a safety rodeo and obstacle course," said Nicola Truppin, co-chairperson of Friends of O'Day Playground, which organized the event. "[The bike rodeo and obstacle course] was nice. We had five or six participants, and they got gift bags with candy and bike lights, they got to decorate their handlebars," co-chair Barbara Collins added.
