As part of the Boston Main Streets Awards program, Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the Office of Economic Development joined Washington Gateway Main Street (WGMS) in honoring Foodie's Urban Market, 1421 Washington Street, with the Business of the Year Award on Wednesday, June 28. The Mayor's stop at Foodie's was part of a multi-day trolley tour of the Main Street business districts at which he recognized outstanding businesses in neighborhoods across the city.

In the ceremony outside Foodie's, Walsh saluted manager Victor Leon, Jr.; Randi Grohe Lathrop, co-founder of WGMS, on her Volunteer of the Year award; and Jennifer Effron, outgoing executive director of WGMS on her five years of service to the South End business community. Office of Neighborhood Services director Jerome Smith, director of neighborhood development Sheila Dillon, Office of Neighborhood Services liaison Sam Chambers, and District 7 city councilor and mayoral candidate Tito Jackson were among the city officials accompanying Walsh. City Council District 2 candidates Michael Kelley and Ed Flynn took the occasion to greet South Enders, Kelley accompanied by newly minted campaign staffer, former city council candidate Ramon Soto, while Flynn appeared with his campaign sidekick and 14-year-old daughter Caroline in tow.

At the Foodie's event, Walsh spoke to guests and shoppers inside and outside the store and posed for photographs. Afterward, Walsh was well-fed as he strolled down the block visiting other businesses. At Harry O's, 1405 Washington Street, owner Evangelos Xesternos welcomed him with a slice of pizza and at The Gallows, 1395 Washington Street, owner Rebecca Roth Gullo served the mayor her restaurant's signature dessert, Stoner's Delight, a banana, peanut butter, chocolate ganache and fluff confection. "There's no weed in it, don't worry," Gullo quipped.
