Union Capital Boston Network nights and Table Talks
What: Network Nights, first developed by Bill Traynor at Lawrence Community Works, are described as, "The place where we meet and greet, have the conversations we want to have, and exchange wisdom and favors." Network Night includes a 20-25 minute breakout session called "Table Talks". It is an opportunity for people to host conversations about things they want to talk about in the moment. The emphasis is that these are just short conversations and don't have to lead to a new program or action. If people find that there are some natural next steps then they can and should stay connected to each other. There will be a 50/50 raffle, dinner and childcare for children ages 3-10 will be provided.

Free Bilingual Playgroup
What: There is a free Jamaica Plain based playgroup in English and Spanish for children ages 1-5 years old. Each playgroup is 2 hours long, and parents should bring their children once a week. The playgroup takes place in a classroom setting and the goal is preparation for kindergarten. Each playgroup includes free play, circle time, snack time, and a gross motor/sensory activity. Get a Free Bicycle with ABCDC and CommonWheels' Earn-A-Bike Workshops
What: Allston Brighton CDC, CommonWheels, and the Jackson Mann Community Center invite you to participate in the Earn-A-Bike workshops. Earn-A-Bike is a great way to learn mechanical skills while working on a bike that students will be able to keep at the end of the course. Over the course of the six weeks participants will learn: the basics of bike maintenance, how to fix a flat, re-cabling and adjusting brakes and gears, and more in a supportive and inclusive learning environment. The workshops will also include opportunities to learn about Boston bikers' experiences and skills for biking in Boston. This program is free.
Participants who attend at least 5 of the 6 sessions will earn:

  • a fully functional bicycle
  • a helmet, lock, and lights
  • training on maintaining, fixing, and riding your bicycle

    ABCD Career Explorations Program is Seeking Applicants
    What: ABCD Career Explorations provides year round programming to Boston residents, ages 16-21, through job placement, career development, and comprehensive job readiness services through one-on-one case management. Career Explorations offers in school and out of school youth the opportunity to receive basic skills and advanced training in high-demand career fields including building trades, culinary arts, early child care, and health and biotechnology. Through the program youth meet professionals from an array of occupations within each pathway, participate in workshops and field trips throughout Boston to enhance their career development. The Career Exploration staff also provide individual job counseling and assistance with the job search and application process in order to help link youth to jobs that match their interests.

    ABCD WorkSMART Program
    What: This opportunity is available to Allston-Brighton agencies, businesses, etc. to get some extra help at no cost while helping to support local teens build job skills. ABCD has a group of youth who will begin working in the Allston/Brighton area in early February and are currently recruiting worksites within the neighborhood. The youth would be placed at the site for an 8-week internship, working up to 12 hours per week at their worksites after school. The students will also participate in job readiness curriculum prior to beginning their internship as well as attend weekly tutoring sessions throughout the program.

    Senior Save Applications Now Available
    What: City announced that applications are now available for Seniors Save, a proactive program that helps income eligible seniors replace failing or inefficient heating systems before winter begins? Applications are currently available through the Boston Home Center (BHC), by visiting the Department of Neighborhood Development's website, or by contacting one of the BHC's partner senior agencies. To qualify, income-eligible seniors must be 60 years of age or older, the occupants of a residential one-to-four family property or condominium in the City of Boston and income must not exceed 80 percent of median family income, as determined by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development. Eligible homeowners will receive a $3,500 grant towards upgrades to their heating systems. Any additional funding is available in the form of a zero percent interest, deferred loan, which will only be payable on the sale of the property, a refinance or transfer of the title. Once a senior citizen submits an application, BHC Construction Specialists will work with the homeowner on the scope of the project, and will help select a contractor from the BHC's pre-approved, licensed and insured contractor list. A BHC Construction Specialist will then oversee the work from start to finish.

    Project CARY Participation
