Salvation Army Kroc Center 6th Annual Tree Lighting

What: The Kroc Center will be hosting their 6th Annual Tree lighting. There will be a special performance by the Salvation Army band, a short devotional by Pastors, ringing of the "Official First Bell", annual Kettle Kick-Off, and light refreshments.

YEAR UP Recruitment

What: For young adults interested in taking their next step in their journey towards a career & higher education, Year Up's mission is to close the opportunity divide through a one-year intensive program. Immigrant Legal Resource Center (ILRC)

What: What immigrants can do now. People should go to a legal services provider to be screened for any possible immigration options other than DACA they for which they may already eligible. The ILRC has a comprehensive client intake form to assist practitioners in screening. It can be found online at https://www.ilrc.org/screening-immigration-relief-client-intake-form-and-notes.

Volunteer with Sole Train

What: Sole Train is a community building and mentoring program that uses running as a vehicle for setting and achieving previously unimaginable goals. Volunteers are asked to commit 1-2 hours a week of weekday practice time and 5 weekend races/community building events. No running experience is required.

Boston Tuition - Free Community College Plan

What: Boston Public Schools Superintendent Tommy Chang and Mayor Martin J. Walsh launch the application for the tuition-free community college plan, which provides a cost-effective entry point into higher education for Boston's young people.

Boston 1ON1

What: Boston 1ON1 is an opportunity for a new resident to learn about the many services in Boston that might affect them. It would also be a chance to ask questions about anything from park use to parking. As City Hall to Go already processes parking permits, provides trash and recycling stickers, assists in signing up for city apps (BOS311/PARK BOSTON), and much more, new residents can leave their meeting with all of their City business taken care of, and a better understanding of this new place they are calling home. In addition, Boston 1ON1 will introduce residents to cultural resources, state and federal resources, as well as important information regarding their new neighborhood.

Health Impact Assessment (HIA) Conference

What: During this conference, participants will discuss the state of HIA practice in MA, examples of Massachusetts HIA case studies and their impacts, and an agenda to advance HIA practice in MA. United Family Support Group at Jackson Mann Community Center

What: United Family support groups are a safe haven for family members and loved ones of alcoholics and addicts. These meetings are facilitated by recovered addicts who will share their experiences and offer a solution to the family members who are affected by addiction. Family members and loved ones suffer immensely due to the trauma they experience while supporting or living with an addict. This meeting is solely for loved ones, it is closed to addicts and alcoholics.

Justice & Victims' Rights

What: A weekly meeting of survivors of homicide victims. Meetings will include speakers with significant and varied experience in the judicial system. A time to "de-brief" will conclude each meeting, to reflect on the evening's content and check in with each other. The final meeting, after Thanksgiving and in the midst of a challenging season for survivors, will include craft making (a popular activity from previous years), a simple meal, and a brief ceremony of remembrance.

Daytime Culinary Arts Training Class

What: The Salvation Army Kroc Center Boston Culinary Arts Training Program is now accepting applications for its winter cycle of classes. The Kroc Center Boston's Culinary Arts Training Program is a 10-week course serving the Dorchester/Roxbury community for students in need. It teaches knife skills, food terminology, kitchen safety standards, recipes, and effective work performance. Program is free of charge. Community Servings' January Teaching Kitchen Food Service Training Program

What: Community Servings is a nonprofit based in Jamaica Plain dedicated to providing over 2500 meals per day to chronically ill Massachusetts Residents. They offer a 12-week skills training program overseen by an experienced chef. Curriculum covers all facets of working in a professional kitchen including food safety and sanitation, nutrition, knife skills, and quality food preparation. Students must be 18 years or older, proficient in English, and a legal resident.

When: Classes start January 4, 2017 and run for 12 weeks.
