The McKinley School, a therapeutic, special needs school located at 90 Warren Avenue, is destined for demolition.

Current plans call for a 4-6 story, 150,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art school for Josiah Quincy Upper School to be built on the site.Josiah Quincy currently has three campuses in the South End/Bay Village/Chinatown and, as we understand it, would like to consolidate the middle and high schools. The third school is elementary and will remain as a stand-alone.

Boston Public School (BPS) system has not identified a new, suitable location for McKinley's 400 children, although the McCormack and Dever schools in Dorchester are under consideration.

Much of the money (at a cost exceeding $100MM) for the new building would come from the Mass School Building Authority (MSBA) funds. State funds will expire in June 2017 if a plan is not in place.

BPS has sent notices to students, faculty and staff saying that approved plans exist to begin construction next Summer. BPS will address the faculty "at some time in September [2016]"; with a meeting for the community at a date to be determined. To date there has been no community outreach.

Boston Landmarks Commission has confirmed that the design of any new proposed school building would need approval from Landmarks. There is a Mass School Building Authority Board vote scheduled for November 9.

When a community meeting is announced, the neighborhood will be immediately informed.
