Mayor Walsh Will Reopen Childe Hassam Park April 26

Wednesday Apr 16, 2014

Mayor Martin J. Walsh and the Boston Parks and Recreation Department will celebrate the reopening of Childe Hassam Park in the South End with a ribbon cutting and block party on Saturday, April 26, at 1:30 p.m.

The reopening of the park, located at 314 Columbus Avenue, marks the completion of a project with a construction budget funded by $278,531 from the City's Capital Improvement Plan, $39,767 from The Friends of Childe Hassam Park, and a $35,000 grant through the Edward Ingersoll Browne Fund. Additional funds for design work were provided by The Friends of Childe Hassam Park.

The park renovation includes brick paving, granite curbs, seating, lighting, landscaping, irrigation, drainage, artwork and an ornamental fence.

Childe Hassam Park was closed to the public in recent years due to its deteriorated condition. During construction of this project, remnants of a former gas station were found underground. Additional testing and tank removals were needed resulting in approximately $17,000 of additional expenses above and beyond a project of similar scope.

The April 26 ribbon cutting celebration will include refreshments provided by H.P. Hood LLC, the official dairy sponsor for the Boston Parks and Recreation Department's 2014 park openings.
