Columbus Center businessman accused of scheme

Martin Raffol, 54, executive vice president of the residential arm of WinnCompanies, is being accused by the FBI of "engaging in a scheme to conceal material from the Federal Election Commission," a Department of Justice press release says.

Shots fired on West Newton Street

At approximately 11:45 on Thursday, September 2, police responded to 85 W. Newton Street for reports of shots being fired.

Planning for Hurricane Earl

Today Mayor Thomas M. Menino convened city officials to develop emergency response plans in preparation for Hurricane Earl’s arrival in the Northeast. Earl is currently a Category 4 storm located off the coast of North Carolina and is expected to weaken to a Category 2 storm as it reaches the Boston area between late Friday morning and early Saturday.

A man was brought to the BMC with two gunshot wounds in his leg. Though the victim didn’t say much, he alluded to the fact he got shot while at a club. Police were unable to locate any crime scene.

A lifetime of learning

"You just have to have an interest in learning," South End resident Helaine Simmonds, 74, said over the phone recently. She was talking about the requirements to attend the University of Massachusetts (UMass) program, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), which offers classes to people over the age of 50.

Long-time resident still busting a move

"Dance is the visual expression of sound," Duggan Hill explains. "You have to look like the sound. If not, it’s just movement." As he says this, Hill glances over at the dancers rehearsing in front of the mirror, mentally critiquing their moves. It is August 22, a Saturday, and some of his City Lights students have come to practice their dance routines.
