Medicine Wheel Luminaria Installation
Boston Center for the Arts, 539 Tremont Street

ABOUT THIS EVENT

The Artists of Medicine Wheel Productions are now accepting photos of individuals affected by HIV/AIDS for a major art installation to be displayed on A Day Without Art/World AIDS Day at the Boston Center for the Arts November 22 through December 1.

Participants from across the country are sending in photos which artists use to create wood block print portraits. One print becomes a panel on the Luminaria installation, one is returned as a gift to the participant. Artists are invited to collaborate in Luminaria by creating original wood block print portraits or by mentoring teens in participating in the project. Medicine Wheel Productions has a mentorship program for youth, many of whom have experienced significant loss or are in recovery or have been referred to the program through the courts. Under the mentorship of professional artists these teens are creating hundreds of portraits to be included in Medicine Wheel Luminaria.

According to Medicine Wheel Artistic Director Michael Dowling, the project not only sheds light on the epidemic but also helps the young artists process their grief. "It’s astounding how much the youth connect to the portraits-they identify with the project through the pain in their lives." Dowling see this project happening at a pivotal time is the history of the epidemic. "At this point in the history of the epidemic, all of our lives have been affected-we have lost loved ones, or support long terms survivors, or have come of age during the age of AIDS."

Medicine Wheel is a 24 hour event of art, performance and ritual that has been installed on World AIDS Day for eighteen years at the Boston Center for the Arts.

Participants are invited to e-mail photos to:
