Kevin Smith, Pine Street Inn's Director of Security, was honored with a community service award at Boston's 2015 National Night Out. Pine Street also won the "Top Crime Watch Group of The Year" award in recognition of its crime prevention activities.

The event, which recently took place, is celebrated in neighborhoods throughout Boston each year, with a focus on building positive relationships between the community and the Boston Police Department.

Smith is not only dedicated to keeping Pine Street safe, but also the surrounding South End area. He regularly attends and participates in neighborhood community meetings. Though Smith has retired from the Abington Police Department, he has utilized his law enforcement background to develop and implement new security policies at Pine Street.

"It was an honor for not only me, but, for Pine Street Inn as well to have been singled out and recognized by the community for this service award. I realize that I am just but one spoke of the wheel in the great organization known as the Pine Street Inn, and that it took several individuals working together in collaboration to accomplish our stated goals of providing a safe and secure environment for staff, guests, visitors and community organizers."

Pine Street Inn began creating permanent housing with on-site support for homeless men and women in 1984. Today, Pine Street has 38 locations with close to 900 tenants throughout Boston and Brookline. Working more than 1,600 homeless individuals daily, Pine Street provides permanent housing, job training, emergency shelter and street outreach, with a goal to help men and women reach their highest level of self-sufficiency.
